COASTAL MANTA RAY (Manta alfredi)
Rays
There are two general names for rays in Hawaii, LUPE, which mean "kite" and HIHIMANU, "magnificent. Only 2 species of monk seals survive in the world today. Hawaiian Monk Seal One lives in the remote areas of the Mediterranean Sea, and the other lives in the Leeward chain of the Hawaiian Islands. A third species used to inhabit the Caribbean, but was forced to extinction in the 1950s by the increased human use of the seal's habitat. The food of the monk seal consists of eels and small octopus. Eels are well known to Hawaii as PUHI, Great favorites of Divers, morays are among the most easily to observed member of the reef community. They peer from coral watching the underwater world go by. while they thich muscular bodies remain securely hidden.
